Compared with ductile iron casting, due to the large specific volume of graphite, the shrinkage of the gray iron valve castings during solidification is reduced, the process can be simplified, the stress of the casting can be reduced, and a dense structure can be obtained. In addition, because the chemical composition of gray cast iron is close to the eutectic point, the molten iron has good fluidity and can cast very complex parts.

The basic feature of high-density molding sand for gray iron castings is that the amount of coal powder added is also low. Therefore, we control a few points when preparing sand.

① Clay content and mud content. Molding sand with high clay content increases its strength as the specific pressure increases, and the effective bentonite is usually controlled at 7% to 10%. The sum of effective clay and dead clay in the molding sand is equivalent to the mud content, and the mud content is generally controlled at 12% to 16%. Too high or too low mud content will affect the performance indicators of the molding sand.

② Moisture. The moisture in the molding sand of lost foam castings is the main factor that determines the plasticity and bonding force of the clay. When the water content is too high, it is easy to cause the clay cohesion to deteriorate, the fluidity of the molding sand decreases, and the uniform mold density cannot be obtained. When the moisture is too low, the molding sand is not easy to mix, the molding sand has low strength, high brittleness, poor mold release, and easy to cause sand sticking defects in castings. Generally, the moisture content should be controlled to be 10% to 20% higher than the moisture when the peak wet compressive strength is obtained.

③ Grain size of raw sand. In high-density molding, the sand mold has a higher density and large expansion during pouring. Therefore, the raw sand size should not be too concentrated. The raw sand particles are round or polygonal. Generally, three-screen sand or four-screen sand is selected.
